CORNED BEEF FACTS
Corned Beef was first produced in tins in 1887 in Argentina!
Corned is a take on a medieval word for Cured in Salt.
Corned Beef is made from the brisket cut of beef.
British Soldiers were eating Corned beef as rations as early as 1899 during the Boer War.
The term "Bully Beef" is derived from the French for Boiled Beef - Boeuff Bouilli.
The wierd shaped cans associated with Corned beef are Trapezodial cans and were introduced for military supplies.
Corned Beef and Cabbage is the traditional St Patricks Day meal in Ireland
SPAM FACTS
SPAM was first marketed as Hormels Spiced Ham.
Hormel offered $100 to anyone to come up with a catchy name - SPiced hAM -hence SPAM
SPAM is actually luncheon meat made from pork shoulder
SPAM was first manufactured in 1937 by the Geo. A Hormel Co in the US
Over 15 million tins per week were produced in mid WW2
SPAM was known as "the miracle meat"
SPAM was not beef so it was not rationed in the US during WW2
Nikita Krushchev credited SPAM with the survival of the Red Army in WW2.
OTHER FOOD FACTS
Food rationing began in January 1940 (petrol was the first in 1939) and ended on July 4th 1954.
In Britain bread was not rationed until after the war
The first foods to be rationed were butter, sugar, bacon and ham.
In November 1939 the Daily Express proclaimed that "The public should revolt against the food rationing system...."
The famous dried egg was introduced in June 1942, initially mistrusted, it soon became very popular. The allocation of dried eggs was one tin, the equivalent of a dozen eggs, per person every eight weeks.
Fruit and vegatables were off ration along with offal, game, fish and sausages.
Pigs were often reared for food by the local fire brigades.
